Year 4

Welcome to Year 4!

Your class teachers are Mr Grice (4G) and Miss Moseley (4M).

Our Topic for the Summer term is ‘Invaders and Settlers'.

We will be learning all about Anglo-Saxon civilisation and culture, including the legacy of the Anglo-Saxons in modern Britain and in the local area.  Our areas of study will include: Anglo-Saxon myths, art, writing and warfare.  Any research that your child can complete during the Summer term will help them throughout the topic and will be shared with the class. You can find our Invaders and Settlers Knowledge Organiser in Curriculum Information below. This has been stuck in children's work books and will be used throughout our topic work.


Our Science area of study for the first Summer half term is Living Things and Their Habitats.  Amongst our discussions, we will learn how to classify animals, what defines living things and what vertebrates and invertebrates are.  You can find our Living Things and Their Habitats Knowledge Organiser sheet in Curriculum Information below. These are stuck into the children's books and will be used throughout our Science work.


Our Science area of study for the second Summer half term will be to investigate the life of a famous scientist.  We will work with the children, and allow them to decide which scientist we will focus on.


PE Days

In the Summer Term, 4M will be swimming on Mondays and have PE on Wednesdays.

It is crucial that swimming kit and monetary contributions are brought into school on Mondays.  Please see the letters from your class teacher for details.


4G will have PE on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.


Please ensure long hair is tied back and any earrings are removed on these days. It is helpful if girls wearing tights have a spare pair of socks in their PE bags.  Please make sure all of your child's clothing is named, especially jumpers and cardigans which they take off during the day.



Homework must be handed to the class teacher by Thursday to be marked. It will then be reviewed on a Friday, when the next week’s homework will also be set.


Children are encouraged to present their homework however they choose; there is no ‘right’ way. Children are not expected to do all their homework alone – please feel free to support them as much as they need.


In addition to their pink book homework, each week the children will be set 2 pieces of online homework, also due on Thursday: (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar)

We also expect children to practice their times tables (Hit the Button is a useful website), weekly spellings, and to read every day of the week.  Please record in your child's planner when they have read at home.  Planners must be in school every day as they are used as part of your child's learning and are useful to record messages for home.


Completion of home learning will significantly help the development and progress of your child at school. 


Etymology Bingo

In Summer we will be continuing a game of 'Etymology Bingo' in Year 4.  This is to help our children learn the meanings of a wider variety of words, and to find links between them.


Your child will be able to explain to you how we play, and how they can earn Team Points. You will also find details in you child's planner, and can find the list of words in the 'Etymology Bingo - Word List' file below.
